Latin American Studies in Montreal · Sep 6, 08:55 AM
Deb and I are in Montreal for the Latin American Studies Association Congress … with 5000 other scholars of Latin America including 135 Cuban scholars!
The LASA congress was originally slated for Boston, but was moved when the State department denied visas to all of the Cuban scholars.

This is our first time to visit Montreal…I am practicing un petit peu de mon français… now I am really confused between Portuguese, Spanish and French….not to mention English in which I have always been confused.
I am presenting my paper on religion and democracy in Brazil and Colombia in a panel on Friday morning at 10:00 am with another scholar from Mexico who is presenting on the liberation theology of Gustavo Gutiérrez.

(The next day-the paper went well)
Last night Deb and I went out to Old Montreal and walked around with some of our friends and fellow Latin Americanists. In the photo below, the two guys on the ends of the table are Eduardo from Peru (right), who is in the 2nd year of the masters in Latin American Studies at FIU with a focus on economics, and Francisco from Uruguay (left), who is in the 3rd year of a PhD in sociology and is researching public funding and policy options for Puerto Rican men infected with HIV virus in Boston.

Down the left side of the table are Susan, who teaches sociology and studies Colombia, Marta from Bogotá Colombia, and Kate, who teaches Gender studies and resides in Canterbury, England. Between Eduardo and me on the right is Stacey, our good friend that Debbie and I met in Brazil last summer, who is finishing her dissertation research in Colombia for a PhD in political science Rutgers. All lovely and delightful people …we thoroughly enjoyed the evening with them!
stay tuned! more to come.
Joseph

The picture above is Joseph “swimming in the ocean”.
The metaphor is that he has gotten out of the church fishbowl and is swimming in the ocean of mainstream culture — specifically academia — kind of “Nemo-isk”.
Happy swimming my brother! And blessing on you and the new and existing relationships that you will cultivate this weekend.
