I have been learning lately, with help from Debbie and from God, to simply live in the moment and to enjoy the experience of peace and joy in the little thing of life, like spending time with friends. A group of my friends wanted to celebrate my achievement of finishing with the comps exams, so they invited me out to sing karaoke on Thursday night. I went first in order to lower the bar of expectations by singing Tom Petty’s “I won’t back down.” We had a blast, just singing and having good clean fun with no agenda. There was a bubble of joy and grace there … several of my friends commented that they had never had that much fun, nor had they felt that “free” to sing or dance without self-consciousness. That reminded me of a quote from one of the letters of St. Paul: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
Jesus spent a lot of time at parties, and once even changed water into 7 big jugs of really good wine. He was also called “the friend of sinners” but it is important to remember that this was spoken in the context of criticism by some sour people, not affirmation. Isn’t it amazing how history constantly repeats itself?
I have already gotten in trouble on facebook when old friends (Christian leaders) have seen photos of me having a little too much fun, at least in their opinion. And yet, many of my young non-Christian friends have begun reading the bible, and thinking about important life issues.
We should stop taking ourselves so seriously and just learn to enjoy life while loving God and loving our neighbor. The world would be a better place. And oh, one more thought: in the famous words of Tom Petty – “I won’t back down!”
