God is real, no matter how you feel.
The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain, thanking God during a trial, trusting him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving him when he seems distant.

Every morning Debbie and I spend the first hour of the day in quiet, contemplative worship (actually, not totally true…the first 15 minutes I hold a cup of coffee and just stare at the wall with hair that would scare you!).

My favorite movies of all times are probably the three Lord of the Rings movies. One of my favorite scenes in the movies is the scene where Aragorn is crowned King and married Arowyn. The adoring throngs are gathered and bow down to reverence their new king. When the four little hobbits bow down, Aragorn stops them and says, “you bow down to no one, you are my friends!”

Since Debbie was diagnosed with stage 4, metastasized breast cancer, surrender has become the most important operative word in our lives. We both have been practicing the fine art, and the spiritual discipline of surrendering our will to God’s higher will and to the greater good on a daily basis. I have come to believe that the most powerful prayer in the world is Jesus’ prayer of surrender in the garden: “Not my will, but thine be done.”

The thing that makes me happiest in the world, the one thing that I live for is to see Debbie smile. Her smile lights up a room and lights up my heart.

We are wired for pleasure. This is part of being created in the image of God, because God also desires pleasure.
The Lord takes pleasure in his people (Psalm 149:4).
